When Logic Fails, Try Temperature

Ed and Tabitha often find themselves talking about those simple, sensory shifts we usually take for granted—like the sharp, clearing relief of a cold breeze or the weight of a heavy blanket. We know that for our students, that instant shift can be the difference between a meltdown and a successful testing session.
When a student blanks out or feels that surge of panic, it isn't a moral failing. Their brain’s emotional center has decided there’s a threat, so it bypasses the rational Prefrontal Cortex—the part they actually need to solve that math problem. The TGD team helps students look at this as a physiological data point and develop strategies to bring the brain back online for the rest of the test.
You can’t talk someone out of a biological shutdown. Logic is offline. You have to use a bottom-up approach to force the system back to center, and you have to plan and practice that strategy in a safe, low-stress environment.
The Tip: The 10-Second Reset Button

One of the strategies our coaches teach clients is to use Thermal Modulation. This reset triggers the Mammalian Dive Reflex by using temperature shifts to stimulate the trigeminal nerve to tell the heart to slow down—instantly.
The Move: Have your student press a cold water bottle (or a cold pack) against their wrists or temples.
The Breath: While the cold is there, exhale slowly for a count of six.
The Result: This stimulates the vagus nerve, moving them from fight-or-flight back into a restorative state where they can actually think.
