Stop the Morning Tug-of-War with a "Choose Your Own Adventure" Menu

A brain-based way to offload decisions while strengthening autonomy!

We’ve been leaning into the lingering pace of winter this week! With the two-hour delays from the snow and ice, Team TGD has been enjoying the rare luxury of sleeping in and actually finishing a cup of coffee while it’s still hot.

We’ve been reflecting on how "extra space" in the morning preserves the energy teens need to build their own identity. While they love the luxury of a lazy morning, the return to routine requires guardrails to keep them from being "overdrawn." Teens crave autonomy, and we can honor that by moving toward a Choose Your Own Adventure model. By building in non-negotiable If-Then anchors for health, alongside an Option Menu for their morning "bridge," we reduce friction and give them the agency they need to thrive.

So, as we move back into the regular rhythm of the week, try:

TIP: Create a Decision Tree

Parents, co-create a "Choose Your Own Adventure" menu to help your child bridge the Task Initiation gap. Define your Anchor (the non-negotiable) and your Option (the flexible choice):

  • The Anchor: "If I eat breakfast, then I take my meds." (Unavoidable and concrete).

  • The Option: "After breakfast, I move my body. I can choose: Walk the dog, write in my journal, or 2 minutes of stretching."

GROW: Shift your mindset!

Keep the effort low-stakes! When a teen challenges the plan, they aren't being defiant—they’re practicing autonomy. See it as a positive data point in their developing identity. Rather than seeing a slow start as a failure, see it as a signal that they need to exert agency over their own environment.
