Ed and Tabitha have watched it happen more times than we can count—that moment during an SOL where a student’s eyes glaze over and their posture starts to melt into the chair. In this state, "focus harder" is often the least helpful advice you can give. They aren't being lazy; their brain’s battery has simply dipped too low to power their executive functions.
When a student gets stuck in an emotional loop or drifts into a fog, it’s a biological signal that they have shifted out of their thinking brain and have lost access to their executive functions. We help our clients view this as a neurochemical shortage rather than a moral failure. To get back to an analytical state, the brain needs a quick, localized burst of dopamine and norepinephrine.
The catch? Most testing environments don't allow for a lap around the building. We need to lower the floor on the solution. We focus on strategies where the effort to start is near zero and the profile is completely discreet—essentially jump-starting the car battery without anyone else noticing the hood is up.
The Tip: The Chair Pull Protocol

This is one of our favorite tactile actions because it’s invisible to everyone else in the room but incredibly loud to the brain.
The Setup: While seated, have your student grab the sides or the bottom of their chair.
The Push-Pull: They push their feet firmly into the floor and pull upward on the chair with maximum effort.
The Release: Hold that full-body tension for ten seconds, then suddenly release everything at once.
The Result: That sudden "dump" of tension triggers a transient release of the exact chemicals needed to wake the brain up and clear the fog.
