Backpacks in the Closet, Screens in Their Face: Stopping the Summer Slide

The TGD
The binders are recycled, the backpacks are buried in the closet, and the schedule has finally opened up. There is a specific kind of magic in a summer afternoon that has no "due dates." But for many of our families, that lack of structure can quickly turn into the "I’m bored" refrain or a total digital hibernation.

The thing is, the school year provides a massive "external brain" for our students. Bells, planners, and teachers act as the scaffolding for their Executive Function. When that scaffolding disappears in June, it’s normal for a student’s systems to feel a little... mushy.
Without the daily practice of the classroom, skills like organization and task initiation might join those backpacks in the closet.
You don’t need to turn your summer into summer school to protect their progress. We can prevent the summer slide and keep those cognitive muscles sharp just by layering a casual skills challenge onto the things you’re already doing.

The Tip: Three strategies from our Summer Skills Challenge list!
The "No-Reflex Catch" (Response Inhibition): Play catch with a ball, but if the thrower shouts "Drop!", the catcher must let it hit the ground instead of catching it.
The Science: This trains the brain to put a P A U S E between an impulse (catching the ball) and an action.
Family Meal Prep (Working Memory): Read the ingredient list once, then try to gather everything from the fridge and pantry without looking back at the list.
The Science: You can't actually expand your working memory—it has a biological limit. This exercise is a low-stakes way to remind your student exactly how quickly that mental sticky note fills up, reminding them why we must constantly off-load information onto external systems (like agendas and reminders) instead of trying to white-knuckle it.
The "5-Minute Power Clean" (Task Initiation): Set a timer for 5 minutes of high-energy cleanup. The goal is just to start, not necessarily to finish everything.
The Science: Lack of Task Initiation is often a start-up problem. This reduces the friction of starting by using a low-stakes time limit.
Grow: The Mindset Shift
When executive function skills join the backpacks in the closet for three months, they lose their tone. But we don't need a heavy lift to fix that. These quick games act like a low-stakes gym for your student's brain. By keeping task initiation and working memory active in fun, micro-doses throughout the summer, we protect their progress without adding any unnecessary stress or friction to your family's break.
