From Fragile Identity to Resilient Self-Worth
The Single Bucket Identity
Welcome back! Tabitha is officially home from Hawaii and we are all bracing for the "Spring Forward" this weekend. While we love the extra daylight, we know that shifting our internal clocks can be a bit of a regulation hurdle for our EF families.
Speaking of hurdles, we’ve been reflecting on a client moment this week. A student—known as "the smart one" in her family—received a poor grade on a science test. It wasn't just a bummer; it was a total shutdown. Because her "identity bucket" was filled entirely with academic performance, that one grade made her feel like her whole self was "broken."
So... we are shifting our focus from the Post-it on the screen to the "buckets" we use to define our worth.

TIP:The Multi-Bucket Identity
The Action: Sit down for 60 seconds and help your child identify three "Identity Buckets" that have nothing to do with school. These are the "Anchors" of who they are (e.g., "The Kind Friend," "The Graphic Novel Expert," "The Dog Walker").

The Script: "I noticed that science grade made you feel like you aren't 'the smart one' anymore. I wonder if we can look at your other buckets? You are also the person who makes everyone laugh and the one who never gives up on a hard Lego build. Your 'Smart' bucket is just one of many."
GROW: Shift your mindset!
When our kids have "asynchronous development," they feel smart but act "scattered." This gap creates a "Fragile Identity." Our goal isn't to fix the grade; it’s to help them decouple who they are from what they produce. A grade is a data point, not a definition.
